Great job Adam. As I mentioned elsewhere, I'm useless with the factual details for this sort of thing, but having seen the master list I reckon there are still some fairly large holes here. My gut feeling is that I saw the band four or five times, though I'd have to concede that they were so important to me that I might have inflated that figure to fit the emotional impact the gigs had.

I'll save you all my rather threadbare reasoning, but my hunch is that we're missing, at the very least, a significant number of UK dates in late 1985, summer through to autumn 1986, and the same period in 1988.

Cheers gazza, i'm sure you're right, esp re 1985 and there's also a load of stuff from Sydney before that to come out.

I've just found a reference to a show at Dingwalls with The Go-Betweens, Sept 4 1984, which is listed as the first Triffids UK show, and another odd date or two, but I'm unable to add them at the moment - I keep getting an error message.

Now added.  Urpal, you've mentioned a trip to JBs sometime, that must have been 85 given the size of the venue.

The Dudley gig was late '84 or early '85, but I can't find a record of the date at the moment. Those ticket photos I've posted were flotsam from the trawl. It was surprising to find in my enquiries that Dudley JBs still exists as a  concert venue and has a website.

Impressive job, Adam. That's quite a long list now. I'm sure there are still plenty of dates to come out of the woodwork, but that's a good solid framework.

Full line up on the Australian Made tour, from what I've read rather than from memory, was:

INXS, Jimmy Barnes, The Models, The Divynls, The Saints, The Triffids, I'm Talking, Mental As Anything.

I'm Talking, if they're remembered at all, are probably known nowadays only as the band that Kate Ceberano was in, but I've got no idea if she has any presence in Europe.

I'm Talking also notable for being a splinter group of Essendon Airport. Robert Goodge was on guitar.

Couple of minor points:
June 1 1985, the place name is Seinajoki
The May 26 1989 Helsinki gig was in Tavastia-klubi

If we're adding supports, the support on the 3 '87 tour dates I saw in Scotland were the Jack Rubies, who were actually quite good. Wonder whatever happened to them?

Well, the flyer is labelled as Perth gigs but the article above it says the band moved to Sydney right at the start of 1982.  Pete, if you're passing, can you let us know where you got the flyer from and/or why you think it is Perth? Thanks

Edit - flyer here, in case anyone recognises it as being of their manor

The Perth flyer was from a guy called Adrian Butcher who came across my web pages:

"While researching an article on David McComb and the Triffids for a
magazine here in Melbourne, I came across your website.
In my own collection I have some items from Perth (where I lived
throughout the Triffid's history)."

He sent me some scans. This flyer was titled '1982 Perth gig flyer'. As he had been in Perth then I had no reason to doubt him.

On a different note.....

October 23 Nottingham, Mardi Gras

Ah, I can finally put a date to this gig. I was right up pressed against the stage. It was wonderful.
I always believed it was early 1988.
I posted these pics yonks ago:

It's a remarkable thing, but that top photo of Marty could easily have been taken at the Nick Cave gig the other night. Similar natty dress code, pose and hairstyle (perhaps a bit longer now and less slicked back quiffy). I believe it would have been the exact same bass guitar too. Just goes to show that time is a relative concept.

Nice one Mark.

Cato, if you're checking in, do you happen to have details of that Sydney 85 show from which your exquisite photos come?  Or any others?

My 1st and only Triffids gig was Keele University Lindsay Hall
refectory,1st or 2nd week of December 84.This was during my early drinking days so i was a bit gone by the end of the night and jumped on stage to get the setlist and David's written down 2 verses of What Goes On.Also met Robert before hand buying cigarettes at the bar. This was during the Miners Strike,so i think there were a few families from the local Silverdale Colliery given a free Christmas Party. Some bugger nicked my black puffa jacket and someone tried to set fire to the curtains,so it was a memorable night.Setlist:
I'm a Lonesome Hobo
Hell of a Summer
My Baby thinks she's a train
What Goes on
Lonely stretch
Beautiful Waste
Red Pony
Ballad of Jack Frost
Raining Pleasure
Monkey on my Back
Field of Glass
You Don't miss your Water
Branded
Bright Lights Big City
No Fun

I now have 25 Rolf Harris lps!
Cheers,Dave

I now have 25 Rolf Harris LPs!

There's a thread called Guilty Pleasures for that sort of thing rolffan, though with a name like yours I sense you might not be feeling too guilty…

Think I've still got my copy of his Stairway To Heaven cover somewhere. That, at least, was a moment of pure genius.

Ooh and it makes me wonder
How does it affect you blokes?
Ooh and it makes us wonder
That's interesting that, yeah.

Certainly the best version of Stairway that I've ever heard.

Hi rolffan and welcome.

I think everyone probably has a Rolf moment or two in their past but maybe not enought to warrant 25 LPs. I had no idea he'd been able to release that many or have you just got 25 copies of the same one?

I saw The Triffids play at The Red Parrot Nightclub (Perth) on Thusday Feb 9 1984 . . . I still have the tape. Also,I'm pretty certain I saw the launch of' Bad Timing' at The Shaftesbury Hotel in March 1983 (Chad's Tree were the opening act as I recall). And the WAIT Cultural Hall gig was in 1984 - I still have the ticket and the flyer.

Thanks for the welcome. Yep . . . from Perth. I first saw The Triffids in early 1982 . . . and then saw almost every gig they played in Perth. Also,I was lucky enough to catch many performances by Chad's Tree,The Scientists,Gary Meadows Syndrome,Bottomless Schooners of Old,Blackeyed Susans,Wild Honey etc. I'm going to go through my old flyers, posters etc for further info.
Still trying to figure out my favourite gig etc.

My 1st and only Triffids gig was Keele University Lindsay Hall
refectory,1st or 2nd week of December 84. Setlist:
......
Ballad of Jack Frost
.......
No Fun

A couple of interesting songs on that setlist that I imagine were rarely performed. What was The Triffids version of a Stooges song like?

Hope it's ok to just jump in here . . .

Every time I heard/saw The Triffids perform 'No Fun' Jill sang it. Did Dave sing it at this show? Maybe Jill singing it was a Perth thing . . . having a laugh at those 'hometown' folk who still thought The triffids were wimps.

"No fun" by Jill!  :o That must've been a treat!
Don't recall them doing it in any of the shows I saw in Finland. I'm starting to think more and more that a bonus-cd of The Triffids playing covers live would be a great idea.

You're not wrong there, VP - as usual.

I can only imagine a slowed down "Afterhours"-style version with the lyrics changed to "No funny business, young man, no funny business" ;) That would be more fitting of the naive melody style of the era.

Having checked the lyrics of "No Fun" though there is a surprising but slight correlation of sentiments between elements of it and The Long Fidelity:

No Fun

"No fun to be alone
In love with nobody else
Well maybe go out maybe stay home
maybe call Mom on the telephone"

Long Fidelity

"Baby let's go out tonight
It will all turn out all right I'm sure
Don't want to drink at home again tonight
So let's go out
Let's go out tonight"

Hi Glee . . . I'm not surprised Jill doesn't remember it . . . it only happened two or three times . . . once was definitely at The Red Parrot in Northbridge . . . it may even have been at the gig to celebrate Dada Records moving from Hay Street to Pier Street . . . The Triffids appeared on the same bill as a ballet company dancing to 'The End' by The Doors as I remember the gig was called "Around The Corner" . . . can't remember the year though>

Not doubting your report - Jill admitted (and this will be familiar territory for some of my fellow travellers) to being in charge of a mind like a sieve.
Someone I ran into in the street attempted to remind me of a mini Triffids reunion at the North Melbourne Town Hall Hotel in '96 or '97 when Steve Miller remarked to him that they were witnessing a historic moment. Can't remember it at all. Anyone?

A list of the shows performed by the Triffids.
1989
June 13 Paris
June 30 Sydney, Enmore Theatre

There was a gig with the Triffids, Goodbye MacKenzie and another band at the Town and Country Club in London. I think it was between these 2 (June 20th rings a bell).  The whole evening was recorded and later some of it was broadcast on Thames TV.  I have it on VHS and watched it this afternoon.  There was only 3 and a half songs broadcast by the Triffids, although they played for about 45 mins if I remember correctly.  It was a baking summer's day, and they opened with Hell of a Summer, although this was not broadcast.  The songs on the show are:
Jerdacuttup Man
Legend in my time (sung by a youngish looking Glee ;))
Fairytale Love (complete with bubbles)
How could I help but love you (fade to credits after about 2 mins)

Anybody else there or remember it ?

The credits running over and premature fading out of a song's performance is really irritating on the telly, isn't it? The same thing happened on the Tube as I remember.

This TV broadcast sounds like news to me. I wouldn't have been able to receive a Thames TV area broadcast even if I'd known about it at the time. Thanks for the info, gerooki.

There's a clip exactly as Gerooki describes on The Triffids Video Collection version 1.0, which I'm sure Urpal must have seen and forgotten about. Video quality on the DVD isn't fantastic, and presumably it's a relatively calm segment of the whole gig, but it's still well worth watching. The credits are definitely for Thames TV and it looks as if the show – all 12 and a half minutes of it – was called The Concert. Sound by Fleetwood Mobile and television facilities by Dales Television if that helps any with the search for the masters.

Apparently it was sponsored by McEwens Lager. Did someone turn up at stage door with a few cases of the stuff to add to the rider?

From what I remember Thames stopped broadcasting in the early nineties but is still making shows like The Bill, so I'm sure that they would get plenty of enquiries about old footage.

Just did a quick search on Dales Television and it seems that the company has morphed into Dales Broadcast, with a website here (http://www.dales-ltd.com/). It's not much of a site, but it's got a telephone number and an email address for their sales department. Looks like they still do concerts.

Hello new to the forum, so a big hello to everyone!
Would like to add to your wonderful gigography, that my first Triffids live experience was at the Sheffield Leadmill, i've seen them 3 times all in Sheffield, twice at the leadmill and once at the uni. My guess the one that is missing is june 85, I know it was around when my son was born (a month later). Good Luck in making it as comprehensive as possible.

Thanks for that Mint. Makes a lot of sense, because I'm equally certain the list is missing several gigs in Leeds, and I'm sure that one of those would be at the same time as the show you mention. Exact dates are never going to come out of my head, but if we keep nagging away at it maybe we'll find someone who knows for sure.

One thing i remember from the second Sheffield Leadmill show was that Robert had broken his leg or something, i'm sure his leg was in plaster and he performed seated on a stool throughout....what dedication. When they played Sheffield uni later, my friend had brought his partner along, my abiding memory was her mentioning that she couldn't help noticing that Dave had, how can i put this, quite a nice package.

I always assumed that she had done hundreds or even thousands of her plaster casts, but read something a little while back suggesting that she'd only done 60 or 70. Syd might be interested to know that she rates Clint Poppy as the biggest. And I think that if he went over to her website (http://www.cynthiapcaster.org/index.htm) he might still be able to buy the casting. :D

Many Many apologies my memory is really really bad so I'm going to mention some Triffids shows I was definitely at.
I am rubbish at years - but I'll do my best to narrow them down a bit for others to help me out with.

First time I saw the band play was supporting a band I was working for - The Farmers Boys at Egham College which is in West London somewhere. I saw them from the side of the stage. This is pre Graham's arrival I'm pretty sure.
They supported another night as well - as I have a vivid memory of seeing them twice but I can't remember where the next night would have been. south england somewhere
I remember that at one of them one of the members of Echo and The Bunnymen travelled down on his motor bike to come and see the band play. I found that intriguing as that band was very important and nr their zenith at that moment in time?

I liked the band so much that at a point after that I promoted a show in Norwich - on a monday night ( this must be 84/85/86 ?? it must have been early on in their time in UK ) and I remember I paid them £75 - I think I might still have the contract somewhere - but I could well have thrown that file out a while ago.
I took the band out for a drink before the show and I remember Rob or Dave reading the Guardian whilst drinking his pint.

As well as working for touring bands at that time I worked for a company called Backs who were distributors of Rough Trade (who licensed TreelessPlain and Raining Pleasure  )- so that must have been around the same time - so someone could tell me when they came out to zero in on a better understanding of timings ?

The only other vivid memory of a gig is in Manchester - I was living in Leeds at the time - later - maybe Calenture period - I think it might have been the International ( a venue towards the edge of town as opposed to the centre ) - I had my car broken into and the copper who took my details couldn't believe I'd travelled from Leeds to see a band called the The Triffids ( mind you he told me he was going to see Eric Clapton play NEC Birmingham the following week and I said I couldn't believe he'd be bothered to travel to Birmingham to see Clapton play).

I moved to London to work at Mute after that. I was their marketing manager and looked after all the bands on the label. In a Melbourne sense I marketed the Tender Prey album for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds so if that helps with timings - again someone might be able to help me here.
Dave popped in now and again to see other people in the building- Paul at Blast First I think.

I've always liked the Triffids but not really obsessively to be honest, working as I have for  record labels - however the band did come in and out of my life at various points -always enjoyed the music and the gigs -believe me when i say i've seen a shedload of support bands in my life, and when i saw them supporting the Farmers boys they were extraordinarily good and so maybe it's that that has retained my interest and intrigue in the band to this day

i have a few other perspectives and tales that relate to the band and why i'm involved with the reissues now - but i'll do that another time.
best to all

Re Melkweg, this is something that has only been confirmed very recently (at least I'm presuming it's confirmed). To this point I've been careful to only tell you about things I pretty much know for certain are going to happen and it looks like Melkweg joins that group.

Always figured that you must have some sort of history with the band, John, but it's still good to hear. Far, far better to have someone with a bit of passion in your corner at the record company.

Did you see any of the Leeds gigs? Sounds like you were probably there at about the same time as I was.

Could have been late 84 but I think will have been 85 - poss at UEA on the June 85 tour?  We don't have that date but it would fit - Bunnymen will have known the band since sharing a few gigs in Oct 84 and the first comprehensive UK tour looks like June 85.  Will def have been De Freitas on the bike.

As well as working for touring bands at that time I worked for a company called Backs who were distributors of Rough Trade (who licensed TreelessPlain and Raining Pleasure  )- so that must have been around the same time - so someone could tell me when they came out to zero in on a better understanding of timings ?

The Cavanagh story has TP ready to come out in the UK towards the end of 84.  I first heard RP in summer 85 when my friend Jim came back from Glastonbury in a high state of excitement about the band.  So I guess there's the 6-8 month period in which they appeared here.

I moved to London to work at Mute after that. I was their marketing manager and looked after all the bands on the label. In a Melbourne sense I marketed the Tender Prey album for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds so if that helps with timings - again someone might be able to help me here.

the venue in Norwich was a small club called the Jacquard - they played it as a one off.
I looked at the list and i'm pretty sure it must be in the late 1984 time period - June 85 is too late as I think they'd moved to bigger venues by then.
i'll try and have a hunt for the file if I can later on today

In reply of your question about the Waterpop Festival of  August 20, 1988: The other bands were: Bad to the Bone, Ivy Green, De Boegies, The Jack of Hearts, Trockener Kecks, The Gun Club, Candy Dulfer's Funky Stuff, The Fatal Flowers, The Screaming Blue Messiahs and Luther Allison. Att. 23.000 . Offcourse most of the bands them were Dutch with The Fatal Flowers and The Trockener Kecks as most important. The Triffids gig was memorable, because when Dave announced "Holy Water" it started to rain and during "Raining Pleasure" it was raining cats and dogs. The Waterpop website remembers The Triffids gis as: The Triffids beats the heavy rain.

Hot, sweaty and hotly anticipated by those who'd waited twelve long months.

The weird thing is that I can't put my finger on the exact years (dates are a dead loss) but I believe it would have been between '88 and '91. 'Ish.

Two more Perth dates for the list, Adam, courtesy of Doddles (see Triffids in Australia (http://thetriffids.com/forum/index.php/topic,928.msg15531.html#msg15531)).

Saturday 28 December, 1985 at the Old Melbourne Hotel
Monday 21 April, 1986 at the Red Parrot.

The Red Parrot performance was at the WA Original Music Awards, so we probably need advice from Doddles and/or Prew as to whether or not it should be in the list. Full show, or just a cameo?

Yeah - I think you're right. Not a full show. They had a number of local acts each performing a few songs each. I'd forgotten about the Get into the Groove cover - that was quite a surprise, but they did it great. The Triffids often injected a bit of humour and fun into their performances.

I remember there were a couple of Sundays in November 1982 where the Triffids played at the Tote. The first show was supporting the Hoodoo Gurus, and the following week they supported the Scientists. My memory is faulty as I discovered beer around the same time I discovered the Triffds, but I believe it was on the 21st (Hoodoo Gurus) and 28th (Scientists) of November 1982.

The Hoodoo Gurus show was the same weekend the Triffds had a party in their flat in Brunswick St above the Black Cat. I think a TV went out the window, and it was my first meeting with James Baker, which was a crucial turning point in my life.

These shows were in Melbourne, but with a lineup like that you could be forgiven for thinking it was a Perth gig. They were the last two shows the Triffids played in Melbourne before they moved on up to Sydney via a return to Perth for Christmas. The Tote is a legendary Melbourne rock venue. I guess it's our CBGBs.

LAMF I think you've helped me here. With the Scientists at the Tote might have been the first time I saw the Triffids, something I've been trying to recall. I say might cause my memory's even worse. But something is stirring in their! The Scientists always played better at the Tote, maybe that was the beer.

The Black Cat, I used to hang around in the Cafe thinking I was cool. Never got invited to the parties upstairs, so I guess I wasn't :).

The Triffids opened for the Moodists at the Mt Erica Hotel in Prahran in late 1982. It was a big night, the Moodists took home $9.00, the Triffids $4.00.
In June 1987 following the Alabama in Munich, the Triffids played Vienna, where they caused so much damage to the Hotel, the Hotel Manager summoned the TM to his office and said it was the worst damge he'd seen since the Rrrrolling Stones in Copenhagen in 1965.They went on to Linz the next night. The TM handed in his laminate and was last seen working in a parking lot in Hoboken. True story.

That'd be the Moodists!  I've mentioned somewhere here that I thought I'd seen the Triffids at the Mt Erica, so some of that money might have been mine. I definitely remember seeing the Moodists play there with Dorian Gray, at around the same time.

Welcome hsm, another Geelong supporter?

Hiya gorgeous ;).....well, something like that anyway :-[

It sounds like Interpol had better divert a special division of cops to Hasselt from the World Cup hooligan control then.

I have another few of shows to add to the list.

In 1982 during their first visit to Melbourne on their way back to Perth after their first trip to Sydney, the Triffids played at the Pier Hotel in Frankston. I can remember David leaving a manilla folder with his lyrics on the roof of Happy Wheels, the Triffids' Hi-Ace van and they managed to drive from the Pier Hotel to the Prince of Wales hotel in St Kilda without losing it.

They played a lunch time show in the Student Union Building of Monash University on the Monday of that visit. I think the Moodists show mentioned by HSM was during this visit as I think Byron was still playing bass with them at that stage. I can remember buying a copy of the Dungeon Tape at that show and having it totally change my life (Literally, as people who know me will attest)

They also played a show at the Bombay Rock in Brunswick supporting Russell Morris, also in 1982 during their second visit to Melbourne, where they stayed for several months. This was when Martyn had just joined and Simon "Le Tact" Cromack was also playing percussion and managing the band.

Got a couple more dates from memory. For the 1986 Australian Tour, the Triffids played at Byron Bay on Feb 27 (Can't remember name of venue), and the Jet Club on the Gold Coast on March 1. I think the Jet Club show may be confirmed by a photo of the venue in the BSD booklet, but it was the one where Rock-Ola with Phil Emmanuel was the support act and the night before was a wet T-Shirt competition. All class!

I may have missed mention of it in the previous posts, but I saw a Triffids Gig(playing as the Killer Plants or something like that) at the Hopetoun Hotel on a sunday afternoon. Not quite sure when it was. The place was packed. Margaret Lamy(forgive my spelling) sang as well with the Triffids. Many of the Triffids friends turned up for the gig including Paul Miskin(Bass player for Tall Tales and True). People were on the footpath outside the hotel as the there was no way the pub could hold any more. Afterwards and during sets the band came out and mixed with everyone. A day not to be forgotten

There's a new flyer posted on pherron's page with the following dates for 1982 - Perth venues I presume.

August 11 Albion
August 13 Broadway
August 14 Adrians

In case you haven't decided on this one yet  - I was only 10 years old back in '82 but can confirm that the Albion, Broadway and Adrians are all venues that existed at that time in Perth.

It wasn't that it was undecided alahoy, they were confirmed and listed - with a bunch of other shows 79-82 - but the top of the list got sliced off somehow, wasn't backed up, and I haven't yet summoned the energy to go back and do them again.

I've only just discovered this site/forum and felt compelled to register to clear up the date and venue of the Norwich gig that bdroop was referring to, which was my first Triffids experience. It was at the Jacquard club, but at that time it was actually called Santanas and the date was November 12th 1984. My main memory (other than "gotta keep tabs on this band") was of an acquaintance of mine, a very tall bloke with equally tall hair (Mark G?) trying to swap waistcoats with Dave McComb, but Dave was having none of it.
Also I have some other support acts for you:
ICA 8.8.85 - supports were Nyam, Nyam and Big & Beautiful.
Hammersmith Clarendon (upstairs) 20.9.85 had Gaspar Lawall (presumably with his Africa Oro band), The Lighthouse Keepers and The Benders on the bill, kicked off by Lawson Square Infirmary (which I annoyingly missed as I was too busy exploiting Fullers territory). My memory is of Dave sporting a rather large bushy beard and Daubney Carshott pioneering a skirt on this occasion...
ULU 22.5.86 had Zodiac Mindwarp supporting.
ICA gigs of 25-26.4.87 had the Onan Brothers in support (they had a song called "bigot on a horse", which probably single-handedly started the great 4th-plinth-in-Trafalgar-Square debate) - I took some transparencies of the band/slide show at one of these gigs, which I may be able to find/scan if anyone's interested (they may not be great...)
I think someone already pointed out that the Jack Rubies supported in October 1987, this was certainly true of the Town & Country Club gig on the 30th.
23.1.88 Astoria - support was Dave Graney in General Custer mode (without whose Moodists I would probably never had ventured to Santanas back in 1984).
1.9.88 Dominion - support was Hunters & Collectors (and very well they were received too).
11.4.89 Shaw theatre - support was Sarah Jane Morris (presumably she of Communards connections).
I hope to turn up elsewhere on the forum as time allows. Those CD re-issues will certainly do no harm in stirring up the memories...

My little computer calendar confirms it was indeed a Monday night - I probably also have you to thank for seeing Marc Riley with the Creepers, the Three Johns, Yeah Yeah Noh, the Folk Devils and a host of local bands on Monday nights. So thanks, bdroop - hang on, the name Brewis is starting to ring vague bells here! - but let's not test memories too far.
Anyway, the Triffids also played another club I used to frequent (where all the bands above also played), called the Rezz in Romford, Essex, sometime around November 1984, but I didn't go as I was based in Norwich. (Stoodents! Bah!) My brother almost certainly went, so I can ask if he kept notes.

Hello baldd.  Do you pronounce that 'Baldy'? Thanks for this, I've stuck it in the list.  I've also patched together as much as I can of the earlier years and stuck it back in.  And saved a copy this time, ahem.  Seems there's more old timers around lately so hopefully they can dredge their attics for some times and places.

Adam. Thanks, glad to be of service. I'm not totally devoid of hair just yet but I've no problems with that interpretation of my "name".
Just to clarify; the Moodists didn't actually appear on the bill at Santanas with the Triffids, it was just that I found out about the latter through the former. There was certainly a Doors/Bunnymen/B Party vibe running through their combined outputs at that time.

I found these on an old flyer in a diary from 1986 . . .

Fri 25 April - Old Melbourne
Sat 26th April - Floreat
Fri 2nd May - Old Melbourne
Sat 3rd May - Shenton Park
Fri 9th May - WAIT (not sure this one actually happened)
Sat 10th May - Shenton Park
Sun 11th May - Old Melbourne (5 - 10pm)

I'm certain I saw all of these performances except May 9 - which is why I think it may not have actually happened. Perhaps I just needed some sleep.

I first saw the Triffids at Macquarie Uni in 1982. They played a gig at the Southern Cross/Strawberry Hills Hotel in mid-June 1984 which was a tribute to Elvis - lots of posters of hamburgers decorated the band room. I also saw them at the San Miguel in Cammeray, I think it was early 1986. They definitely played in North London on 4th July 1986 - I think it was the Town & Country?

I've got a leaflet advertising a Triffids headliner at the Trade Union Club on May 7 - this would be either 1983 or 1984 (my guess in '83). The supports were Sekret Sekret and the Particles.

There's a show missing off the list, I think - well I'm almost certain.

Me and junkmale saw them quite a few times together, but we didn't meet until the autumn of 1986 so it was after that. It was definitely a student union in London but not ULU or the LSE because, having been to see so many other bands at those places, I'd remember the venue. This place, I'm almost certain, was in the Bloomsbury area and had a bar with big windows looking out on the street - you walked through the bar into the concert hall at the back. And it was standing, so not the Bloomsbury theatre. Stands out partly because it's the only gig I ever went to at this venue.....

I'm pretty certain it would have been 1989 'cos I've a distinct memory of seeing them at the Kilburn National and the band playing either "What Goes On" or "Beginning to See the Light" - and then seeing them a couple of months later (at the gig I'm thinking of) and playing whichever one of the two VU songs it was that they hadn't played at the National. They also played "Billy" - which was the only time I ever saw them perform the song......

Anything you want to add Snook?  We're a bit thin on the early days.

Time to add the latest shows to the list you think?

I saw that gig at London ICA , which according to the list was August 1985. That was a great show! A band on fire.

There was , If I remember, a review of that gig in the Guardian. As much as they praised the Triffids , they laughed at the support acts.

1982 they played a series of shows at the Subiaco Hotel (Perth) on I think Wednesday nights. Possibly July-September. Remember them vividly as it was the only pub in town which didn't care I was 17 (and looked 14) - but I drank water only to "play it safe".

The posts above bring back memories. I'd have been at all the Broadway Tavern gigs, most of the Shaftesbury, and countless others in Perth. (By 1983 I could get into pubs easily by showing my student ID card - even though I was still 17  :)

Particularly remember Lonesome Hobo. And their distaste for playing any requests.

But no doubt at all, Dave was a genius singer and songwriter.

Found another stash, probably find some more articles if anyone is interested.

Still wondering about a couple of shows that I cant see on the list. Positive they played four Wednesdays straight in 1984 at the Strawberry Hills/Southern Cross prior to leaving for the UK.

Also, a Sunday arvo show at the Hopetoun in 1985 with Tall Tales And True, Graham, you must remember that one. And whatever happened to the evil looking electric 12 string that Dave used to play and that Matthew de la Hunty played that day?

Not sure that I do remember the Hopetoun one. Any particular reason that I should? Did I do something embarrassing?
Is this an acoustic electric or an electric?
Title: Re: Triffids gigography - Master list
Post by: weasel on April 23, 2008, 10:16:36 PM
I think it was an extra 'farewell Sydney' show late February or early March. I left for the UK soon after, in March.

The 12 string was an electric, painted white with small pastel coloured lines on it. I saw Dave play it at least once prior to you joining the Triffids. It was probably Matthew de la Hunty's as i saw him playing it at a few TTT gigs.

Actually, I remember going to this. I don't remember there being any live music, though, and I certainly don't think I played (this flyer says my band was playing). All I remember doing is chatting a little with Brett Myers from Died Pretty and eating a few sandwiches. Very strange.

25 years on those must have been pretty memorable sandwiches, JJ2 ;D

Here's a tester: Can you remember the particular filling?

On a less daft note, it's funny how the memory plays tricks after such a long time. This gigography corrected my memory in quite surprising ways. If it's correct then the first three times I saw The Triffids were all in the space of one month and one took place the day after the other:

June 7 Dudley, JB's
June 8 Coventry, Warwick University
.....
June 23 Glastonbury Festival (w/ Echo & The Bunnymen, Hugh Masekela, Green On Red, James, Billy Bragg, The Colourfield)

If you'd asked me to guesstimate from memory I'd have said Dudley was late in one year, Warwick was early the next and Glastonbury that Summer.

Based on recollection alone, I would have said the Dudley JBs gig was Wintertime here, which is self-evidently not the case unless my memory transported me to Australia. Mind you, as I expect you know, British Summers can be almost indistinguishable from what other nationals expect from Winter :).

Three more early gigs.

First is 1983. Second maybe January or April 1984?

i think julyish 1981. PLC - it was at i think the subiaco town hall.
the theme was 'the day of the triffids'

Triffids fans, greetings from Toronto!

Some time ago, I bought a small Triffids handbill/poster for a "Psychedelic Reaction" gig at the Melbourne Hotel on Saturday January 15th (8 till late). (The artwork has echoes of Lee Conklin's gig posters for Bill Graham in late '60s San Francisco.) The band was supporting "Le" Hoodoo Gurus (on their final gig), with The Debutantes at the foot of the bill. If you were an "era casualty", you could get in cheap, with students and pensioners.

Scanning the gig list on this site, there's no mention of this one. Of course, the promoter was thinking more of living and paying punters, rather than posterity - so no year appears here.

Now here are some clues...there's a hand-written list of 27 (abbreviated) song titles on the back. Looking at track listings (10 are from Treeless Plain, plus several from the Bad Timing EP, Reverie and The Dungeon Tapes), my guess is that the gig was either Jan. 83 or Jan. 84.

Was anyone reading this at this gig?

PS If you want to see photos (poster--side + tracks), pls send your e-mail address.

Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Jonathan

Jonathan - you can post images on the forum, this might help. If it's Le Hoodoo Gurus that means it's def early eighties before they dropped the "le".

Again, the Subi Scout Hall was the scene of a 21st birthday party- probably August/September 1982- I saw a band do Clare Grogan's "Happy Birthday" with the lyrics "Byron Alsy" instead. Apparently the Scouts turned up in the middle of the show wondering why the Scout Master wasn't there to teach them the value of preparation.

missing show.....
I know I saw them at the Boston Arms in London, sometime between May '85 & May '86. I was so lucky to be an American living in London, just at the same time when, not only The Triffids, but so many great Aussie bands were living there as well...Go-Betweens,Nick Cave,Crime & the City Solution,Apartments,Moodists,Scientists...most of which I would have had no chance seeing In the US. I remember this show particularly, because, not only was it a stormer, with then-new songs like Shell Of The Man,Region Unknown,Trick Of The Light, etc, being heard by these virgin ears, but I also got to meet Dave himself, thanks to playing in the last incarnation of Slaughter Joe at the time. I went with Joe Foster & Alan McGhee, who kindly did the honors. I was surprised how tall Dave was & he was very cordial & relaxed...when he got on stage, however,a bit of that "southern precher" thing came over him...I was transfixed for an hour or so....saw the Oct '85 ULU show & one other that escapes me,but the Boston Arms show was THE ONE!

Good to hear from you, Tripsychord, and for your story.

Someone I ran into in the street attempted to remind me of a mini Triffids reunion at the North Melbourne Town Hall Hotel in '96 or '97 when Steve Miller remarked to him that they were witnessing a historic moment. Can't remember it at all. Anyone?

If this is the same show I went to it was a wonderfully intimate and shambolic costar gig. Unlike most gigs I go to I didn't record it so don't know the date and can't verify if Steve did say that.

Milton, is it Ballads Only (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/peter.herron/triffids.htm#BalladsOnly) or this (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/peter.herron/triffids.htm#CoverStory)?

Don't think anyone has turned up a date for the ballads night, but the venue seems to have been the Shaftesbury Hotel. There's also another listing for the show at The Club that has Lawson Square Infirmary playing first.

Downloaded The Club a little while back, and the sound is pretty good.

No Gazza, its the one listed as "Perth Covers Night 1989" its definately not 1989, its either 1983 or 1984.

The "Ballads Only Night" is an interesting one, LAMF has it down as the 25th of August 1984 and Chris has it down as the 15 of August 1984.

Can anyone confirm which is the correct date?

Hey Milton,
When you say the Ballads and Covers nights are available, what do you mean?
Where from? Do you have copies or know where I could get a copy of each??
As for the Covers night I have a copy of a gig poster for this.
It was on Thurs 23rd Feb 1984.
I have to admit this was not mine. An old friend(Zelda) gave me a copy and
arranged to get Tshirts printed up with this on the front. Looked really great!

I had a copy of this also. I always thought it was the last gig The Triffids played at the Governor Broome (birthplace of the Perth punk music), however it was not.
As you can see from the gig list it was only that they having  a 2 month break before returning.

Don't think we saw this side of the band in the UK, but The Triffids must have played even more farewell gigs than John Farnham.

Here is a clipping from the NME advertising a gig at the "Klub Foot"
which appears to be The Clarendon Hotel Ballroom.
My sister in law Kathryn Roberts who was living in London at the time sent me the clipping.

Was the 18 March  1988 show not at Easts as well (see 1989 show in Brisbane)? My memory might be merging the two though. All that beer.

I clearly remember standing on top of a  cigarette machine at the 88 show though - it was the only way I could see over the tall people.

(Random memory: the Exchange 1984. Snuck out of boarding school to go. Was caught coming back in. Ended up being suspended for two weeks. Bonus.)

No idea if it's still possible to edit Adam's original master list and add a more accurate date, but I just spotted a poster for what seems to have been the first Triffids gig, over here (http://www.songkick.com/concerts/6670476-scientists-at-hernandos-hideaway-perth-western-australia/posters/1444991). Posted by Glee, naturally enough.

Now, is there anyone out there who can tell me anything about the next few Triffids gigs? From what I understand, the gigs 2-5 were all at a place called The Stoned Crow in North Fremantle, roughly 4km south of Peppermint Grove. At some point later the place was renamed as Mojo's, and is still going strong. According to Adam's list, there were 13 there in total, but all in the early years.

Actually quite important that I get to the bottom of this, but I can't tell you why just yet. Thanks. Any info you have on the venue would be appreciated, too. Feel free to send a pm.
