Title: Who know's what he says?
Post by: Shane Tilbury on October 31, 2007, 06:52:21 PM
Have not checked to see if the answer already exists on this site as I've only just registered & got too much work to do, but which diehard Triffids fan can tell me what David 'whispers' during the opening piano entre to 'Save what you can'? I've wondered for years, but I just can't make it out, no matter how loud I turn the volume up....

Lonesome - don't be too hard of the poor chap! You may put him off. Have you never included a typo by mistake,  in your excitment and enthusiasm to post something?...

I should know this but I don't. having had a good listen and even slowing the thing down I'm still none the wiser.

In all my excitment (sic), stonesurfer: just once ;D. Nighty-night!

It might be "between"

Been wondering this for years myself, and really couldn't work it out. Just had a crack at it in Logic, with only the left channel and some serious eq. Thought at first that it could be 'between', as Glee suggested, but I think there are at least three syllables. Current theory is that it's 'I'm too young' or 'interior'.

But any of these answers begs another question: why is it there? Mixing error? Cryptic message?

I just checked and I can't hear him whisper anything. At what point does the whisper occur?

All I can hear just using the Videolan player is a one-syllable word spoken in his normal voice, which to my ears sounds like 'tree' but could possibly have been 'three' (and if so would presumably have been left over from a count in - i.e., "one-two-three" - on one of the tracks).

I've always thought McComb said "turn it up", presumbably to Gil Norton or an engineer.

Actually, it's not a spelling error, it's a punctuation error.

Similar mistake in a health and lifestyle magazine I saw yesterday - it talked about how milk thistle had been used by 'the Roman's for liver and stomach problems.'

I don't think it's a three but I should listen again. It was intentional to leave it in. There are other spoken bits on Triffids songs, notably Jill's "yeah shut the door" on Good Fortune Rose. The funny thing about this is that it was on her demo and that's why it's included on the actual track. When she did a demo of the song, someone came into the room while she was doing a vocal and she it sounded good so it was faked for the real thing.

Sounds like you've found the right bit  about nine seconds in. The rhythm is just about what it would be for a one-two-three, but the 'sibilance' isn't anywhere close.

Listening again, and bearing in mind that it's intentional, I think it might be 'Enter here' in a deliberately plummy voice.

Let's hope we can rule out 'smegma' as a possibility.

Try it backwards. It's probably something about Satan, these things usually are. Dirty devil worshipping rock stars trying to corrupt our kids.

Definitely not smegma. And, sad to say, played backwards it sounds like 'nyet more' which would hardly have qualified as satanic even at the height of the cold war.

But it has to be said that there's nothing like a good bit of backmasking to antagonise those idiot middle American fundamentalists. If enough bands went in for it, the musicians of the world could probably get the Christian right so worked up that we'd be able to forget about an invasion of Iran for at least another few years.

The only thing it sounds like to me is "between", could be muttering to himself and reminding himself of things to come, and that word does come up.

Reminds me of the similar instance of "shut the door" in VU's "Inside of Your Heart" which makes for a nice link seeing as Triffids did whole lot of VU stuff and indeed that particular song as well. Do you think it might have ended up being left in as a conscious nod to VU?

Actually I pride myself when it comes to spelling. All I can attribute the blunder to was the pressures of life in Zimbabwe! I was rushing yesterday...I'm certainly not put off. I usually correct everyone myself. We need good english teachers here, are you available lonesome? As to my question, some interesting responses. Now I'm going to hit the spell check key.....

Well I don't think I would make a good teacher, my English (with heavy Flemish accent) is lousier than one would imagine and - Zimbabwe huh? - ... I just sold my private jet! :D

It would seem spell checkers don't identify capitalization errors. ..

Hi Shane
I`m sure there are some of us here who would be interested in any insights you might care to share with us about life in modern Zimbabwe.
The press here are uniformly negative about the place and I suspect it no better in Europe. So is it as bad as the big bad west makes out?
There is an awful fascination in watching a country that inherited relatively strong institutions and a robust economy self destruct at the hands of someone who appears to have been widely loved for many years
I recently read Peter Godwins memoir-when a crocodile eats the sun, which was part uplifting and part depressing.
He made the point at the end of the book that to some extent Mugabe has succeeded in making white and black more or less equal in the country.Unfortunately he has achieved it by bringing everyone down to the same level rather than raising the poorest up.

Not sure I can answer your question satisfactorily here but I see you are in Brisbane so I guess you've seen the influx of Zimbabweans into your city in the last few years. Most of them will be bitter so they may not give you a balanced opinion of the country.

Zim remains a wonderful country with fantastic people, both black & white but it is a nation in the throes of great anguish right now, the reasons for which are complex & historical. I doubt whether all you Triffids fans are too interested in the internal strife of Zimbabwe - you must all be sick of reading about it. If you want to e mail me I'll gladly give you more specific details.

Meantime, I don't believe we have reached consensus on the answer to my question...

On a similar note, don't suppose anyone knows what he says at the end of 'One mechanic Town' do they?
"I've never never.....????????"

Nine years on and still no satisfactory answers, but I see this post has LOTS of views.
Are you still around lonesomesquare, or have you now found a companion? I see that 'The Triffids' are performing right now. Anyone planning a night at Corner Hotel?

C'mon people!!! Officially more than 10 years now. Nearly 12,000 views.
And it all started with a grammatical mistake. I've not forgotten Dave McComb. Have you??
