Apparently #66 is an Australian guy (looking at the nickname) who calls himself caniman and who last active on this forum on 14th January 2005 @ 02:53:13 AM - just 9 minutes after registration. So the guy who got the short version of the Number of the Beast actually lives Down Under: kinda makes sense in a dantesque way, doesn't it?

But the question is of course: where is he off too? Does anyone feel inclined to send him a personal message? I'm not too keen myself I must say, not knowing what might happen...

Still no sign of life from our friend the caniman, but have a great birthday anyway!

We have a new member called wetcamelfood in our mids... an alias which just screams for an explanation!

And a big welcome to you by the way. And if you want to try one of our numerous great polls I would suggest to start with this one Cheesy

Tried to post this yesterday but a mixture of too much wine and a dodgy pc seemed to make it disappear (it was mainly the pc not the wine, honest)

Anyway at the risk of repeating myself - I'm not really a new member as I registered about a year ago (just before Hasselt) but I've never really embraced joining in with this on-line community thing (and I've no real idea why as I've really enjoyed reading the posts but contributing seems different). Anyway thought I'd eventually take the plunge.

About me - have turned 40 this year; first saw the Triffids supporting Echo and the Bunnyman in Glasgow (as per FoG on the audio). Rarely turn up to see support acts but the gig was rescheduled from the previous week.L et's Active were supposed to be supporting and I was quite keen to see them - didn't know that the support had changed. Anyway from memory the only way I knew who the new support were was a piece of A4 paper cellotaped to the keyboard with the band name on. Was impressed and bought Raining Pleasure (£3.75 in Listen) the next day. (as an aside on the date of the called off gig I went across town to see Shriekback who were awful).

After that I was completely sold and saw the band a couple more times (favourite being the QMU on the Black Swan tour - everything just seemed right that night).

Up until the Q&A in Hasselt my encounters with the Triffids was GLee asking for a light in Fury Murrays in Glasgow and Martyn Casey persuading me to buy an "L" Black Swan t-shirt when the "XL" had run out in Glasgow. It never did fit me. Similar problem in Hasselt where the t-shirt seller talked me into buying an "L" instead of an "XL" with the line "you're not as fat as you think you are". I asked Martyn a trainspotter question in Hasselt on the Saturday and he ripped my accent. (Special mention to my mate Gavin btw who came over from Glasgow on the strength of how much I wanted to go; maybe a bit out of place in his "New Model Army" t-shirt but he thoroughly enjoyed it).

Favourite Triffids album is Born Sandy Devotional, favourite song is Stolen Property (sends shivers down the spine and felt like a near religious experience for me in Hasselt, mind you so was "yeah, shut the door" in GFR). Close seconds - too many to mention - Branded, Region Unknown, Convent Walls, Bad News..., Open For You, Falling Over You, Spinning Top Song, Wide Open Road, and more; I could (and frequently do) go on for ever.

Noticed the "ringtone" thread - it's really sad I know but my ringtone is the intro to "Son of Reverie".

Other favourite acts - Joy Division, Nick Cave, Frank Sinatra, Rezillos, JaMC

Hobbies - trying and failing to buy Triffids items on ebay, supporting Celtic

Anyway that's me

Hi there!

I'm Ralph. I joined only a week or so ago, having never realised there was a Triffids web page (more fool me).

I'm a Brit, living in Stockport aged 42ish.

I first came across the Triffids via a (very complementary) gig review (Melody Maker, I think) in the early-mid '80s, while  I was at Uni. I was intregued by the band name, and more so by the title of a track quoted in the review "my baby thinks she's a train".

Several weeks later I came across "Love in bright landscapes" in a second hand record shop and bought it. To be honest, my impression was mixed, but it got played a fair bit. Then I saw a review of "Born Sandy Devotional" and knew I had to buy the album (for the title alone) which I did shortly after. That album blew me away - I was hook line a sinkered. Despite it being responsible for ending a relationship (see previous post - was never gonna work out, anyway) I then tracked the band closely. I bought Calenture, and Black Swan when they came out, but was only fortunate enough to see the band gig once, in London, after the release of Black Swan. Not sure why I never saw them live more often, but I was living in Exeter at the time, and they rarely went that far west (I was a poor student, at the time too).

That's about it for me. Great to meet you all on this forum, and great to know the spirit of this wonderful band, and the legacy of David's music are still hot and thriving. My only regrets are that I didn't find out about this several years ago, in time to come to London for the BSD plaque unveilling, and to see the reunion gig in Belgium.

All the best to you all. Looking forward to some fun posting.

Ralph

We must almost be neighbours, Ralph, and not just in years.

There are a good few forum members from around the Manchester area. Unfortunately, not many are as active as me and I'm an unsociable bastard so we've never actually met up - unless I wasn't invited Smiley

Thanks Syd, - your welcoming comments are most appreciated.

Likewise Urpal; sounds intriging! Are you in the Manchester area too? I had the (probably false) impression that most board members were either "proper-aussies", or Belgium/europeans (judging by the way their english is far better than mine!). Anyway, if you are local to me, I'd be delighted to meet up for a pint or twa. I can't believe you're as anti-social as you make out, judging by the humour of your posts...   I'm sure if there had been any meet-ups, you'd have been warmly invited.  Wink

Thanks Gazza - interesting world coverage. I'm surprsed there aren't more Australasian members.

My pin has duly been stuck in.

I notice there are no South American or Asian members; we could do with some to get decent world-wide coverage. Anyone planning to emigrate?

Not sure I've got a rapier, or a broadsword either, come to that. But I do have a trusty stanley knife, which can do quite a bit of damage in close quarters!  Wink Wink

The Triffids were never big in Australia - it wasn't the cultural mecca of today in the 1980s......
