It's Leonard Cohen's 80th birthday in September and his fans are currently undertaking a similar exercise to the Britton Street plaque campaign to raise funds and install as a birthday gift to him a bench overlooking the sea in a beauty spot on the Greek island of Hydra where Cohen lived in the sixties (and which experience in one way or another we can safely say inspired, amongst others no doubt, the songs Bird On A Wire and So Long Marianne).

Coincidentally the death of Cohen's Zen master mentor and friend, Roshi, with whom Cohen dedicated his time as a Buddhist monk on Mount Baldy through much of the nineties, was announced today:

I guess he'll be feeling pretty cut up about that....although the Buddhist philosophy might make you a bit more accepting of these situations.
