I see you've gone with river not well on my friend sleep, I still hear 'well' (but perhaps I'm not hearing that well), did anyone else have a listen?

Lanallu

They took me down river in the stray baggage boat
Along with the moon and a letter she wrote…

Thanks Gazza - all I could hear was "moo" and I should really have guessed it was moon!

Just like in BSD all I can hear is
Quote
Now I don’t wanna hear no gossip or chat
No bell or pea candle or sin
but can I make any sense out of that? No I can't.

As for This Whole World... What do you think about Gazza's post Urpal?

I'd just like another opinion before it's (my friend sleep) finalized,as I only think I'm hearing mill (I'm hearing mill...er now).

happy with cliff Smiley.

It's definitely river, mark t, unless you're further upstream Grin

Are you listening to the Setting You Free single version or a live version of My Friend Sleep with some ad libs?

OK and thanks Urpal, river it is! And yes I'm listening to the Setting You Free B Side.  Besides, b-sides are better.

Apologies for resurrecting this behemoth but activity on another thread has highlighted that lyrics at the main site for the Raining Pleasure EP are a bit suspect.

I notice that the last chorus on Jesus Calling is apparently:-

Quote
I'm afraid I'll have to call
the whole thing off now
I'm afraid I'll have to disconnect your line
I have Jesus calling me

Well, not on my version it isn't. I have

Quote
I'm afraid I'll have to call
the whole thing off now
I'm afraid I'll have to nip you in your bud
I have Jesus calling me

Were the first ones the lyrics on a lyric sheet that weren't what were performed or something? In which case which version should stand?

Likewise Embedded - original struck out with what is sung in square brackets

Quote
Step a little bit closer
There was something you mentioned under your breath
That's the special something I'd always hoped you'd mention
Say it louder now we'd[ll] soon be dead

Tell me, tell me you love me
or else, tell me, tell me you'll bear with me
Hold [Tell] me, tell me you'll have me, embedded

Come on and lay your body down
[Lay] Your weary body down
Lay your weary bones in the ground
[Lay your weary bones in this ground]
Step a little bit closer
There is alcohol upon your breath
It's a [certain] dirty feeling we have
And heaven knows we've had it to death

This heart is a good one and dead
This one's an old dead heart of mine
It's died at least a thousand times
This one will go straight to your head
This one will go straight to the base of your spine

Ifs [It's] all turning ugly now
Everything we touch wastes clean away
We'd [would] kiss but we can't find our lips
We speak when we know we have [, we got] nothing to say

Embalmed and embedded
Becalmed and beheaded

Do I hear your step on the stair
And these are the thighs I prize
And these are the eyes I cry.

Off the top of my head (and indeed having sung them in my head - who needs an i-pod?  Wink) I think you're right Eke. Even about that last chorus of JC, no matter what I said yesterday, it definitely is "nip you your (the?) bud"

There are lots of little differences all the way through. For example, in Everybody Has To Eat Dave ties himself to a burning bush (which is much better than the burning buoy that the lyrics have) and then cuts off his arms instead of his legs. Jill travels through the wilderness all the way through Raining Pleasure according to the lyrics whereas it changes to sinfulness at least once in the song.

It's hard to imagine anyone transcribing them mistaking bush for buoy which is why I asked about a lyric sheet.

eke

according to the lyric sheet that came with the original hot australian pressing-

'Jesus calling' has a courus with 'nip you in the bud' and a final courus with 'disconect your line'.

'Step a little bit closer'-
There was something you mentioned under your breath
That's the special something I'd always hoped you'd mention
Say it louder now we'll soon be dead

Tell me, tell me you love me
or else, tell me, tell me you'll bear with me
Hold me, tell me you'll have me, embedded

Come on and lay your body down
Your weary body down
Lay your weary bones in the ground
Step a little bit closer
There is alcohol upon your breath
It's a _____ dirty feeling we have
And heaven knows we've had it to death

This heart is a good one and dead
This one's an old dead heart of mine
It's died at least a thousand times
This one will go straight to your head
This one will go straight to the base of your spine

It's all turning ugly now
Everything we touch wastes clean away
We'd  kiss but we can't find our lips
We speak when we know we have nothing to say

Embalmed and embedded
Becalmed and beheaded

Do I hear your step on the stair
And these are the thighs I prize
And these are the eyes I cry.

in 'everybody has to eat it' is 'bush' and 'legs'.

On 'raining pleasure', there is 'wilderness' in the first verse then 'sinfullness' in the second.

I would think as a general principal we'd use the Lyric sheet versions, but I'd have no problem with printing the alternative/recorded version as well if it illuminates something (which is often so), as long as we annotate the differences.

The lyric sheet was painstakingly and beautifully hand done by someone, presumably Martin.

Could you do me a favour then Mark and compare the lyrics on the main site with your lyric sheet and let me know of any differences? Or scan it and email to me if you prefer.

I'm particularly keen to get rid of the "burning buoy" if the lyric sheet and the song both agree that it's bush.

Since it's the song that gave a name to the album, here's an attempt at the full lyric of Born Sandy Devotional in the version featured as an extra on the reissue of the record:

Born Sandy Devotional

Born Sandy Devotional
Such a sweet girl to me
I do what I can now to love her to dust
For dust is what we all shall be

Born Sandy Devotional
All that I ever knew
I don’t know the wrong of that
I don’t know the good
Both of them ugly, both of them true
Yeah, both of them true

Yellow hood of a car
Salt knots in her hair
Got some cards and some chicken and beer
We can’t mess about
We kiss until…
Kiss until she has to leave

Born Sandy Devotional
Gone are the old and the new
I don’t know the wrong of that
I don’t know the good
It sticks like hot tar to the sole of my shoe
To the sole of my shoe

I don’t want to hear no gossip or chat
No Bill or Pete, Kevin or Sam
They were just poison
They don’t mean a thing
Burn up in my spit
Like the fat in the pan

Born Sandy Devotional
Born under alternate stars
Born to be Sandy’s confessional
Burning like that to be trapped in her eyes

We go for a swim
And we wash it all off
And hope that it leaves us alone
But with each fresh kiss
Blood wells up again
Dries on top of skin
And eats into the bone

Born Sandy Devotional
Bound for an all sunless star
Bound to be Sandy’s confessional
Born Sandy Devotional
Feather and tarred

Born Sandy Devotional
Bound for an all godless star
Headed for trouble, looking for grief
Born Sandy Devotional
Feather and tarred
Yeah, feather and tarred
Feather and tarred

Dust is what we all shall be….
Dust is what we all shall be….

I think we can conclude that at least for the purposes of this song Sandy is the name of a person, female and fully engaged in devotional activity.
