Non-album lyrics
« on: October 05, 2005, 08:59:45 PM »
Could the lyric, if it is correct, also be put in the lyrics section on the main page? And while you're at it, Urpal, could you also put down the lyrics to the other b-sides? I noticed that the lyric section only has the album lyrics.

It's certainly a worthy endeavour - if glee has no objection, it might be a good idea in order to spread the load for various members (in the same way that some of our Dutch speakers kindly donated translations of Mijlemans reviews at one time) to type up and submit a Dave lyric not currently in the lyrics section of thetriffids.com to a topic in this forum. I'd be willing to do another one or two when I get a moment.

Hopefully glee has some proper books of account and will get around to completing the official lyrics page one day. This might help complete that task with us acting as gophers, since submitted lyrics transcrpitions could be copied, pasted and corrected by glee without him having to employ a typing pool.

Here is the topic to post those transcriptions if you feel so inclined, so they all gather in one easily located place.

I'll try and do a couple myself shortly.

Before pencils are sharpened, are there any copyright or other issues at stake in reproducing lyrics here, glee?

My pencils have been sharpened, and I shall forge ahead without thought for consequence.  :D

Here's my offering to the proceedings. Please forgive me if I get any of the words wrong, but I am transcribing them from a very old dusty tape that hold most of the Triffids rare non-albums tracks. Here's my take on it anyway.

Native Bride

You must have lost your nerve
You won't take a step outside
Going back to the stone age
You're going to take a native bride
Won't believe what happens to you...

Some people say it's healthy
Some people say it's not
But you don't get satisfaction
From anything you've got

You used to run to him
Then you wanted more

I fell in to a hole that was left where your heart was
(A hole that was left where your heart was)
I fell in to a hole that was left where your heart was
(A hole that was left where your heart was)

There's not much substance left in
What you can't resist (?)
There's not much use in feeding
Hungers that persist

You used to run to him
Then you wanted more

You're going to follow the jungle trail
Going to hire a native guide
Going back to the stone age baby
Going to take a native bride
Wait and see what happens to you

I fell in to a hole that was left where your heart was
(A hole that was left where your heart was)
I fell in to a hole that was left where your heart was
(A hole that was left where your heart was)

I fell in to a hole that was left when you...kissed the native bride
When you...kissed the native bride
When you...kissed the native bride

Ignore my post elsewhere - this is a good way to contribute lyrics. I can cut and paste from here. Ta.

You Minus Me

Come home from work, to a darkened house
Wake in the night, in an empty double bed
You stare at the ceiling, you pinch yourself
Checking to see, if you're alive or if you're dead

You minus me equals nothing
You minus me, what you want that for?
It's simple mathematics, two and two make four
You minus me equals nothing at all

So you move on up, with a bunch of smart new friends
Sit at a table, at a Chelsea restaurant
Hold your knife and fork in the, proper fashion
Order smoked salmon, order some dessert too
If that's what you want

You minus me equals nothing
You minus me, what you want that for?
It's simple mathematics, two and two make four
You minus me equals nothing at all

It's just simple mathematics, two and two make four
You minus me...
Equals nothing...
At all

Thanks, Sando. Wonderful work.
Could you (or anyone else) also try Baby, Can I Walk You Home?
Thanks.
You think of everything, my dear, but you do not think of me

Right. Needless to say, this has been a rather tough one. There are parts here where David gets quite excited and starts breathlessly firing out words and obscuring phrases here and there amidst whoops and hollers. Coupled with the dodgy sound quality on my tape, it made it never less than difficult to try and capture all the lyrics. I've done my best. There are only one or two lines that I have left blank or with a (?) to denote that I'm not sure what is exactly being said. Maybe others can listen to the track whilst scanning this transcription and form their own interpretations.
Anyway, listening to this song so closely and with detail again makes me realise what a tour de force the whole thing is. Dave seems possessed most of the time, and if the words seems pretty non-sensical and abstract (ridiculous? yes, in the best possible way) when simply read without music, then maybe they weren't really ever meant to be printed!!!! But in the spirit of this thread, I give you..........................

Field Of Glass

I walk a field of glass, I buy a diamond ring
I take a lonesome road, I'd buy you anything
(He'd buy you anything)
Yeah that's correct!
I'd buy you anything

I walk a field of glass, under the sun of steel
Beneath that mean old sun, erasing all I feel
I've got a winning deal
(He's got a winning deal)
I've got a winning deal

I walk a field of glass, and how it hurts my shoes
My feet been smokin' black, since 1892
And I eat razors too
(Yeah he eats razors too)
Yeah I eat razors too

And when my walking's done, and diamonds turn to coal
I'll dig the deepest hole, therein I won't die cold
(Therein he won't die cold)
Yeah that's correct!
Therein I won't die cold

If you will ride with me, yeah come on ride with me
Come on ride, come on ride
Come on ride, come on ride with me
Come on ride, etc

This is your first taste of mystery
How do you like it? D'you feel better already?
I could make you feel so young and vulnerable
Even though your Daddy's rich and powerful
I''m gonna make you fishers of men
I'm gonna teach those birdies to sing
I'm gonna teach those birdies to sing
I'm gonna teach all the birdies to sing
So cheaply now

Come ride, come on ride
Come ride, come on ride with me
Ride, come on ride
Come ride, etc

You can hear my sirens wail, I gotta take another slug now
When you hear my engines fail
On red black summer night (?)
You can hear my sirens wail, I gotta take another slug now
When you hear my engines fail
Slow down little sweet tooth
It's a long way down as the crow flies
Will you really nose-dive all the way down?
Are you planning to crash-dive all the way down?
Are you mine, all mine?
All mine, all mine, all mine?
All mine?
All mine, all mine, all mine?

How does it feel now you've finished school?
Diving through the bottom of a deep blue swimming pool
Hey! I'm the one they call the Seventh Son
I'm the one they call the Seventh Son
How you gonna get your love then?
When you gonna stop these feelings?
When you gonna get your window shopping done?
When you gonna get your Christmas shopping done?
Will you buy now?

Headlights on the highway
And the headlines said she was going my way
Crowd gathers round, could you please stand back?
TV newsman said "She was lying on her back"
Still breathing, still breathing
Still breathing hard for you
Still breathing hard for you

Come ride, come ride this pleasure slide with me
Come ride, come ride this pleasure slide with me
Come ride, come ride ride, come ride

Summer vacation and it's 40 degrees
I don't get excited so I just feel mean
I got your letter in the mailbox today
Do you really mean all the things you say?
Are you on my side?
What will your friends say?
What will your sister say?
What will your doggy say?
He don't understand, your brothers
They don't understand, brothers
They don't understand, your doggy
He don't understand

Doggy doggy, he don't understand
Doggy doggy, he don't understand
He's lost you, he's lost you
He's lost his little nest egg
He's lost his little acorn
Lost his little sweet tooth

Rosebud, honey bunch, sugar pie
Pig tails, button nose, buck teeth, freckles, sugar pie
Angel dust, sugar pie
Sugar pie, etc

I walk a field of glass, I buy a diamond ring
I take a lonesome road, I'd buy you anything
(He'd buy you anything)
I'd buy you anything
(He'd buy you anything)
I'd buy you anything
(He'd buy you anything)
I'd buy you anything
(He'd buy you anything)
I'd buy you anything if you would ride with me
Come ride with me
Come ride, come on ride
Come ride, come ride with me
Come ride, etc

Phew...

I've edited your post of the lyrics of the recorded version of Field Of Glass, Sando, to fill in one or two of the blanks you'd left with my best guess.

I thought I'd picked an easy one here but there's one line I just can't get. Any ideas? (Edit: Got it now I think)

You Don't Miss Your Water

In the beginning
You really loved me
But I was blind
I could not see

Now that you left me
Oh how I cry
You don’t miss your water
Till your well runs dry

I strayed and rambled
I could not be true
I could not believe
That I really loved you

But then you left me
Oh how I cry
You don’t miss your water
Till your well runs dry

In the beginning
You really loved me
But I was blind
And I could not see

Now that you left me
Lord how I cry
You don’t miss your water
Till your well runs dry

Convent Walls

Oh darling you’re leaving for a better man than I could hope to ever be
I know your love is strong for him
And once you’ve gone with him you can no longer be with me
But remember darling how we felt
And remember I was by your side then
And I knew you oh so well
Yes I knew you oh so well

Convent walls can be so high
Please forgive me darling should I cry
Convent walls can be so high
Please forgive me darling should I cry

Well every day you’ll hear the bells that call you to his service again
You’ll walk forever more in his shadow
Never have to stray to be in love again
And with all your voice you’ll adore him
Lay yourself down there in humility before him
He’ll know you oh so well
He’ll know you oh so well
Convent walls can be so high
Please forgive me darling should I cry
Convent walls can be so high
Please forgive me darling should I cry

Do you remember darling how we felt
Do you remember I was by your side then
And I knew you oh so well
I knew you oh so well….

The Byrds sing:
I was a playboy, i could not be true
I couldn't believe i really loved you

Doesn't dave sing "I sit here and wonder" (Otis Redding version)
walls so thin I can almost hear them breathing

You know what, I don't think he sings either of those. Any other ideas? Or doesn't it matter seeing as it's a cover?

Time Of Weakness

In this time of weakness you may have to hold me
You may have to tell me little things that just aren’t true

Say “Come to bed now honey”. Say “Everything’s alright
I won’t let nothing out there get you this or any other night”

Though you may not beat it when you squeeze my hand
Well, do it just for my sake. Do it just because you can
Do it just because you can
Do it just because you can

Well, everything collapses when the devil’s at my heels
Well, wrapped up in your arms you could not know how safe it feels

Switchman swings the letter and the sandman rings the bell
Lying in the darkness there I know that all is well
I know that all is well
I know that all is well

In this time of weakness you may have to hold me
Yeah, you may have to tell me little things that just aren’t true

Say “Come to bed now honey”. Say “Everything’s alright
I won’t let nothing out there get you this or any other night”

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts

I stumble home at an ungodly hour. I pass out lying under the shower
Look at the blood. Dear me, I must have cut myself
Can’t for the life of me think how I cut myself

Just ‘cause I’m more level headed than you
Don’t mean I don’t feel the same way you do
Even the vermin you scrape from your shoe.
Even the vermin that you scrape from your shoe

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts
I’m more afraid than anybody else
I feel more pain than anybody else tonight
Tonight

Bank teller slams dollar bills in my hand
Bank teller slams dollar bills in my hand
Bank teller slams dollar bills in my hand
He speaks the kind of language I understand

And it’s nothing that sickness won’t cure
And it’s nothing that sickness won’t cure

Stumble home at an ungodly hour. I pass out lying under the shower
Look at the blood. Dear me, I must have cut myself
Can’t for the life of me think how I cut myself

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts
I’m more afraid than anybody else
I feel more pain than anybody else tonight
Tonight

eke, you'd save yourself a lot of typing if you checked what songs have been transcribed already in this thread.... ;)

Native Bride has been done and dusted.

Don't worry....I have only just realised that if maybe I was paying a bit more attention, I would have known that Urpal had typed out Field Of Glass the day before me in another thread.  :-[
Oh well........
