The only time i ever saw the Triffids. Christchurch in Dublin. Supported by west of Ireland band This is This, who advised us to enjoy "the triffic Triffids"! I remember that Rob seemed to be teasing Dave by introducing each song along the lines of "this is from our album called...". Dave kept giving him looks that weren't inspired by brotherly love! Anyway a great place for a gig & the Triffids did it proud.

If this was the gig in a crypt or something like it, it was very wild. We had to wait about five minutes before we could start because people were yelling out insults (goodnatured apparently) such as "fucking convicts" and "fucking neighbours". There were church pews stacked up at the front of the stage as a kind of stage barrier and an all woman security crew gently trying to keep people off the stage. We had a ball.

Now this is where my memory fails a little on me, i do remember a slight delay at the start although i don't remember the exact reasons (an irish crowd being good naturedly abusive? surely not!). I reckon that the security people were nuns, they could be vicious bastards. The other thing i recall is the review in the one of the daily newspapers that described a reverential hush at the end of each song followed by rapturous applause, which i think was kind of accurate.

I thought the Christchurch gig was later than '86? Don't recall the abusive shouts or the all female security though this could be down to memory loss. I do remember a reluctance by the crowd to move to the front of the stage. Me and my mates were the first to make the move when the band took to the stage and were rewarded with a front of stage view, with the ability to read the set-list. I also recall stopping some cheeky git from stealing Dave's harmonica before the encore.

Also saw the band in Trinity College Dublin a couple of years earlier, where the support band was the then unknown Hot House Flowers.

You could be right about the date being later, but the latest it could be would be
around october 1987 (i moved out of dublin then!).

I also have vague memories of acquiring a set list, but have not seen it for years...
lost in my parents house methinks.
