Poll
Question: Which of the following would you prefer to see go down on the permanent record?
I knelt, I aimed, I missed, I ran, across the fields where our love began
Sun still burns, Rain still falls, Sin still burns little fiery holes, I hold on tight to nothing at all
Are you drinking to get maudlin or drinking to get numb?
We watched him fade before our very eyes and years before his time
But my vision is strong, and my vision is true
Sleep no more, sleep is dead
Hold yourself up to the light
It's a wide open road
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
It's a long way down as the crow flies
So high you can't get over it, so low you can't get under it
Now the only thing bright is my name in lights, and the night has only just begun
There's a dot on a map, it's just a tiny dot, That's where my sweetie lives, you know that means a lot
I hold you not, but I see you still

I think it looks great just the way it is. Marty designed the Triffids word logo anyway and anything extra would be superfluous when you see it rendered official like.

I agree, but it would still be dandy to see a Marty doodle just for fun - I realise he's probably got better things on his mind and all, but now the heat's off to come up with a crest of permanence a scrawl would still be interesting.

Something based around a bass clef perhaps? ):

Gazza - looks great to me too!  Simple and strong, with the gold giving just enough extra emphasis, I think it could work with the heritage colours, if need be.

Just to be certain, in order to make the application to the council, I will need the following:

1. Drawings and plans showing the alteration proposal - The photos with the plaque superimposed on the building Gazza64 has produced based on Adam & Eke's photos should suffice in place of elevational drawings in view of the minor nature of the works. The plaque design he has provided should also do the trick, but it would be useful to have an alternate version in a "aquamarine" alternate background colour. Should the plaque have a raised white outer edge as is the tradition?

2. Specification of proposed materials (type, colours, materials & applied finishes where applicable) - again, for a simple plaque I would have thought that a colour key and marked dimensions on the plaque design drawing, details of the fixing method and confirmation of the materials involved should be sufficient (eg. enamelled steel).

Looking forward to hearing from you. I'll let you know once I hear back from the building owner with any comments/objections on the fundamentals of the proposal (eg. on positioning, size etc).

Both suppliers appear to be closed today so I'll have to ring them on Monday.

I'll dump a little info here while I'm on, just in case of the proverbial bus/me entanglement...

The suppliers for the vitreous enamelled steel version are Burnham Signs in Sydenham, London - phone number is 020 8659 1525.

For the aluminium version I spoke to Matthew at Davis Architectural of Charlton, London - phone number 020 8853 5997.

The background colour on the mock up I posted a while back is R115 G228 B182

It looks great. Grin

To paraphrase Oscar Wilde: my apologies for sending such a complicated design; I didn't have time for a simple one.

I thought it was Dr Johnson?

Gazza, I can't actually see the picture for some reason,  Sad but I have an idea the font for the Logo may be Caslon, or Caslon Antique (?)

If you can't see it on the page, you might still be able to download it.

After much searching I finally found my font books in a packing box that was still hanging around after my last move a few years back. You're very close but not quite there: it's actually Cartier, a font with a story.

My telephone adventures...

Burnham Signs - Enamelled Steel

I'm waiting on an email giving details of fixing methods and examples of previous work. They can do any dimensions we require increasing in cost if larger and decreasing for smaller. Metallic gold colour is out - well not completely out but so prohibitively expensive they wouldn't commit to a quote - and the best they can do is a yellow ochre. They will work from .eps files which is apparently an adobe acrobat file type. Colour references should be provided in British Standard colour or Pantone references - they can work out a colour from a sample but they have to outsource that task so would have to charge £98 for the privilege.

Davis Architectural - Cast Aluminium

They've sent an email detailing three possible fixing methods which I've forwarded to Urpal. The commonest (and recommended) method is to drill into the wall/mortar and fix in studs to which the plaque is bonded (I'm paraphrasing here from notes I took during the phone conversation which I didn't fully understand). Again, any size is possible. They can do a metallic gold colour which Matt described as "1979 T Reg Ford Cortina" - whether that's a good or bad thing I don't know... Website at www.dnpnet.com containing examples of previous work. Colours again to be provided in pantone or British Standard colour references. They can do a match themselves from files provided with the proviso that colours will look different on different screens so what we think we're asking for may not be exactly what they see when they do the match.

"I knew him as an affable adolescent man" has quite a ring to it.
