As an addendum, if I am meant to be nominating songs from the original Raining Pleasure mini album, as opposed to the Beautiful Waste compilation CD, then I would select:

Raining Pleasure
Property is Condemned
Jesus Calling

i didn't grow up with the Triffids and only JUST got all the CDs i could find, so everything except the tapes and the Reverie and Bad Timing EP. As a new listener, here is my choices:

Treeless Plain:
Red Pony...It's just too anthemic to leave out.
Rosevel... That violin work gives me shivers.
Hanging Shed... when the acoustic guitar comes in you know you are in for a treat.

Born Sandy Devotional:
The Seabirds... The lyrics in the last two verses are amazing, and the 'where were you' line is very haunting for some reason.
Tarrilup Bridge... So strange but amazing. Great choice to have Jill sing!
Lonely Stretch... The Drones are my favourite band of today, and this is probably most similar to their music, so dark and angry, a really good contrast to the first two songs on the album.

In The Pines:
In The Pines... the version with the slide guitar is better, but still a great song and arrangement.
Keep Your Eyes On the Hole... The two acoustics sound really great together.
Born Sandy Devotional... probably sounded nothing like any other song that had been written at that stage. Really wierd mix of Australian indie folk and Eastern European string arrangements.

Calenture:
Kelly's Blues.. Awesome. The lyrics and the music fit in perfectly together.
Hometown Farewell Kiss... i love the shoop shoop in the chorus!
Save What You Can... really beautiful song. its just amazing, really well produced too.

Black Swan:
Goodbye Little Boy... I really prefer the demo version you can get off this website but its still amazing, and nice to hear the complete version too.
Good Fortune Rose... I'm going to choose all Jill Birt songs for this album because i think the way its produced, her voice suits it really well
Jack's Hole... Creepy sounding and the music is awesome. Lots of Tom Waits influence on Black Swan i reckon.

Beautiful Waste and Other Songs:
Field of Glass EP... its not a song but the songs all seem to go together as they have a distinctive feel to them, and they are all awesome, bright lights big city in particular is amazing, and the live version of field of glass is incredible too, would have been great to see that live.
Dear Miss Lonely Hearts... dark and violent, its awesome, 'i think i cut myself'.
Beautiful Waste... my favorite triffids song at the moment. i would love to get the tab for this. it sounds so different to everything else they did, not as folksy as anything on treeless plain or in the pines, but not as epic as Calenture or Born Sandy Devotional. I wish they d done some more stuff in this vein.

Thanks for taking the time to do that, Patrick. Interesting to hear what a newcomer to the music makes of it.

hell of a summer

raining pleasure:

embedded

born sandy devotional:
wide open road
estuary bed
stolen property

in the pines:
one soul less
in the pines
suntrapper

calenture:
bury me deep in love
trick of the light
blinder by the hour

the black swan:
falling over you
new years greetings
too hot to move...

Hmmmm....interesting to revisit this list. This was me all those years ago before Sando stamped all over my true name. Anyway, I've never actually given this '3 Best Songs' thingy much thought since, and I'm struck to discover that most of my choices remain pretty much the same in 2010. Might swap one of the BSD tracks for Tender Is The Night, but that could be the only one that makes me seriously pause for thought. Anybody else find that their choics remain/change completely with repeated listens down the line?
