I thought I recognised the alliteration, hyperbole, wit and knack for a devastating metaphor Smiley

On the subject of pics-by-names, does anyone happen to know if it's possible to post a png image with an alpha channel? Sound dire, I know, but all it means is that you can post an image with a cut-out. None of the images I wanted to post would work, so I've ended up having to use that dobro instead…

What happens when you try to post a png?

there doesn't seem to be a reason administratively for pngs not to function. make sure size is 65X65px.

Just changed the Dobro to a rather nice looking Rickenbacker that I happened to have lying around (in my dreams…)

Should appear as just the guitar (with a small drop shadow) and show whichever colour is underneath, but because the alpha channel isn't being recognised it's showing up with a black background.

On a white background it should look like this:

If you have webspace you can link to the png file for your avatar but it may make no difference. It's probably something to do with the table the avatar appears in. Funnily enough I've been doing a bit of research on pngs, transparency and browser support. IE on a mac doesn't support proper transparency in pngs and you have to follow a fairly complicated hack to get it to do so. When it finally gets sorted gifs will disappear from the web as pngs beat them hands down.

Haven't got any webspace, but if what you're saying about the table is right, this next pic should appear okay (the last one was a jpg showing the image on a white background on my Mac). PNGs are fine in Safari. Can't really imagine that anyone is still using IE on a Mac…

You're right, glee, it's obviously the table… back to the Dobro until I find something else that I like. Not that I dislike Dobros, of course, just that I actually wanted a bass guitar.

Wow, finally I got to know who this gentleman appearing next to Cassiel's posts actually is. Or at least what his name is. Thanks for reactivating this thread.

many, many people are believe me. IE is still the browser of choice (habit?) for most surfers mac or pc. Firefox has made some inroads in the pc world but you still have to design for IE.
