Anticipation and terror in equal measures here...
It is a far, far better thing that I do now, than that other thing I did before that didn't go very well at all.

You know, I hadn't - at least not in living memory. Now dealing with a mixture of feelings fitting for an anniversary, as you can well imagine. As ever, grateful for your work in this, glee...

It's as if he knew the time would come for you to read this account in some odd circumstance at some point.

No Dalsy yet but some other items of interest added.
There will be no Valentine's Day theming going on I'm afraid.

Thank God for that. Too much mush is bad for the brain. Keep the good stuff for the birthday.

Thanks. Apart from making obvious what we lost just before the last century expired, listening to those samples has helped me clarify in my own mind why BS was simultaneously ambitious, inspired and also unlikely to impress the band's established fanbase. The guitar is an obvious bit player in a more intricate, spacious and orchestrally nuanced palate of sound. The wander down Smiths Street involved in the dynamics of the sound is clearer too - the crystalline and clean with only occasional wallop. That's not intended as a criticism - I've spent a good chunk of my last week listening to Morricone, Arvo Part and Michael Nyman Greenway era and this doesn't sound out of place in that company.

The other thing that has sort of shocked me is how ecstatically optimistic Too Hot sounds without the claustrophobia introduced by the words. It's a goddamn fanfare for the steaming pile! So unless I'm suffering from "down for you is upness" then that is something of a musical twist of fate that's been pulled off.

Finally listening to those pieces has reassured me that I can still pick out fine detail in a tune, so that Swans gig last year wasn't as damaging as it might have seemed at the time.

Oh, and I forgot to ask, when Spinning Top was performed live, which elements were performed live and how much was backing track?

Just vocals were live on the one time we did it thusly.
As I said it was a bad night in Madrid. Fine Young Cannibals on before us. Venue was a disco with a swimming pool in it. We had a lot of time to kill before the show. We were playing to a backing track. Do I need to go on?
Actually it may even have been a different song but precise memory is hazy.

I was asking in the context of the Birmingham Irish Centre gig (see joytotheworld's setlist posted here earlier this week and my previous memories of the gig on here if they are still around).

Are you saying the song was only very rarely performed in concert? I assumed from my experience that it was a staple of the BS era live set.

Were I guessing, at least bass, guitar and vocals were live in the performance of the song I saw and presumably drums and keyboards as well, though I guess the siren-like dance beat stuff was rendered by a backing track.

Scrub that glee. I assume you are talking there with a different vocal part.

When we did it live we had a sequence going but vocals, guitars etc were live. The performance that brings back nightmares had just live vocals as it was on tv.

I was just watching a streaming live performance by Richard Hawley on BBC6Music in a Valentine's Day special. One of the songs he did was about his love of nature. Lauren Laverne MC'ing the event made the following comment afterwards - "Awesome and arborial: the two things can go together". True, true.
