It's a long way down as the crow flies...

I got my copy of Deep in a Dream today. There is a fine version of Lonely Stretch by the Mime Set on it. They have now broken up, but their singer Sam Wareing has a fine set of pipes and her new project Wasp Summer is shaping up to be something special. I hereby recommend:

The Mime Set's version of Lonely Stretch is one of my least admired songs on Deep In A Dream. A difficult song not to make sound good, but their version has a slightly bombastic heavy metallish/warbly edge to it for my tastes.

Not that this would exclude my giving their own stuff a go. And it seems Australians may have a greater appetite for that sort of sound (I remember Marty requesting - nay insisting - that Jim Sclavunos play Smoke On The Water at the Bad Seeds aftershow do at London forum a couple of years back and glee has claimed an historic allegiance to AC/DC on here...and The Saints could be mistaken for a monolithic Motorhead to the untrained ear. And I'm not suggesting there's anything wrong with any of that). The same could be said of some of Schvendes stuff and I like them. In fact they sound as though they might be ballparkish.

I agree Urpal, i generally skip this one when playing the cd.

btw, I bought Diving Bell's Alpine fantasy CD on the basis of their contribution and that truly is a fine record.

I have to say I like it very much. But then I'm always in the market for a bit of a racket.
