Who are you particularly wishing to pitch to? Presumably it would be good to catch the attentions of a wider bracket of the next generation somehow (16-30ish). I think it would be useful to have the input of existing fans from that age bracket. Anybody?

Aaah, now I feel young ;-)

I am at the pointy end of that age bracket, but find this question a challenge.

Most of the great unwashed in this age bracket use digital formats. Quantity appears to be taking precedence over quality. Generally, I see a lot of indifference, for example, to lossy formats like mp3.

The risk of providing any tracks for free is that they become a substitute for buying the a CD or digital download. Given the indifference to whether a recording is legitimate or not, I think that is fairly likely.

I personally therefore think that audio players like in MySpace are good. So people can stream the music on the fly, hear it and get a feel for it, but not normally substitute it for a CD or digital download.

For tracks... if one download, probably the obvious pick of Wide Open Road itself? If streaming, something from Treeless Plain/BSD/Calenture/TBS to give a cross section?

I'm also in the younger age bracket (28) and discovered the Triffids when I was 16/17. Wide Open Road was the track I knew and love, and I came across Trick of the Light one night on Rage and was sold. However, perhaps Wide Open Road sounds a bit more of-its-time production wise than some other songs in this day of drier sounding recordings. I made a mix tape of various artists for a friend recently and snuck the Treeless Plain version of "Place in the Sun" on there and he loved it, despite having little knowledge of the band. So that'd be my pick bdroop.

Thanks for responding to this and any other contributions would be welcome and interesting to hear.

I've been thinking about this from a philosophical standpoint (as is my wont) and maybe the counterintuitive approach of not "advertising" the product but keeping it "exclusive" might be best....based on a theory best expressed by reference to the biblical metaphor that its the things that go in two by two that survive the flood.

About getting someone famous to cover one of Dave's songs:
In Jan 2007 when Neko Case was touring in Perth, I gave her my personal best of The Triffids.
It was a two disc set called "Raining Pleasure". (Note this was well before the plan for the DVD about David)
I did this partly because I was struck by some similarity in sound between the earlier albums Neko had released and The Triffids but also deep down I hoped she might cover a song. That never happened. Well not so far but .... She didn't respond to the note I enclosed so I am not sure whether she liked what she heard but it would be hard not too!

I have also pre-ordered 'Come ride with me' - and I am sure it will be great.
I hope it will contain the concert from December 7 1987 in Paradiso, Amsterdam.
Dutch radio has broadcast that gig (and it was really very good), but my cassette disintegrated years ago - and that was before I catched up with the digital age.
Having said that, everybody has their own favourite Triffids gigs, and I am aware that this boxset can't contain 20 or 30 discs...
On the other hand, by adding the Paradiso gig you could just crank it up to 11! Wink

Vurwi

You can find tracks of that concert here http://triffidsbeach.blogspot.com/2008/08/triffids-live-in-amsterdam-7-december.html. So if it isn't on the box, you can find some there.

Yes to all singles and eps, no to Jack Brabham but probably yes to some things that were on Jack Brabham (it was a compilation of various bits and pieces from various sources) and yes to a healthy chunk of material from all tapes.

As someone who has not heard any of these tapes, even some of the very early singles, this is one tempting box set.

I have to say that i'm unsure as to whether to take the plunge or not, not particularly because of the price, yes £60 is quite a lot of money and for what you're getting it's excellent value, but for more of the fact that i'm unsure as to how much playing time it will get. Spare time is a premium, and like many others i'm sure, the amount of time I get to just sit and listen to music on a hi-fi is diminishing, hell i've got stuff I bought before xmas that I haven't listened to yet.

Couple of queries though; how limited is this box set going to be, will there be any for sale at the Barbican? and will there be a nice glossy booklet included as well?I'm sure i'll end up being seduced by this beast, and know I won't be disappointed.

Just a quick mention for Domino records, i've been bowled over by the commitment that they've shown to the triffids legacy, it has truly been something else. They are, along with Bella Union, the most exciting UK label around at the moment, and now that they've bagged the fall, well...words fail me.

Yes to all singles and eps...

An interesting statement there... =)

I hope there isn't TOO much crossover with material already in stores =)

Mint -> Perhaps convert your copy to a digital copy that can be enjoyed in more settings? (this is what I do with all music I own)

For the curious, the Australian bill for the box set, imported via standard shipping, after currency conversion, came out at A$138 on my mastercard.

Enjoying this gradual release of information =)

The singles and EPs have never been released on CD and that's why they're going to be included. There will be a perfect bound booklet in the general style of the releases so far ie much material from Dave's notebooks, original artwork etc.

Everything that has happened around Triffid the past several years are totally unreal, and it will no end tag, Triffid has followed me since 1985, have everything and are now waiting on the box.
Thank you for Triffid Glee and Domino Records

I only got into The Triffids after reading about the reissues.  Took a chance and boy was I not disappointed.  I remember writing on this forum at the time that they were perfect reissues, from the music to the packaging.  Gorgeous remastered sound and extra tracks and little details ie matt paper for the rustic 'In The Pines' and high gloss for 'Calenture'.

Of course once I started listening I wanted more, the vinyl singles box was of no real use to me, so I hoped for a CD of them.  And it's coming and so, so much more.  Even in that small picture the box looks wonderful, and I read earlier in this thread it's looking like 10 CDs!  Fabulous.  A hearty well done and thanks to all concerned.

One thing that someone might know, it's been mentioned several times it's very limited.  Is this only being sold through Domino's website then, or is it going to other retailers?

Thanks
Jon

hi there ( especially Mint you flirt ) - i reckon this set will be no more than 1000 worldwide
as an example we have sold 450 of the 7" vinyl box set ( approx 25 left by the way - thanks all for helping make that one wash its face - that silver shiny sleeve!?? - £1.65 a sleeve alone - I winced when Graham asked for that one - glad we did it though ) so I just thought I'd stick my finger in the air and say 1000 and see how it goes. I won't be able to make anymore as it would be insanely expensive. I sense it's the right number. there's so much coherent stuff to document and present and an inherent logic - it's strange to say but the 10CD's are not over indulgent, it requires this many to do the job.
other than the singles nothing is really doubling up on what you have potentially purchased before - it's wierd isn't it?
The packaging costs of the box alone ( with all its trendy flaps and booklet ) costs in the teens of pounds you'll be gratified to know. Let's delay being green and close our ears to the sound of the drip drip of the melting polar ice caps for a wee while longer...
Anyway it's all glorious to do and hear the tiredness in Graham's voice as he wrestles with it all. Ha!

I'm going to set myself a commitment to list the tracklistings of at least 5 of the CD's by this time next week.

1.Tapes, 2. Live, 3. Singles, 4. Rarities and Unheard are the 4 themes that emerge from Graham's curation process.

best to all you lovely lot
We've just signed Steve Mason - Hurrah!
