I sent an email to Liberation about the box set.

I understand that a Triffids "best of" called "Wide Open Road" will be released in April 2010. There will be standard CD version and a box set including an extensive collection of rarities. In Australia only the standard CD version is to be released. It is a great pity that no Australian record label is willing to foster a local release of the box set. As the label responsible for the Triffids re-issue series I find it surprising that Liberation have baulked at completing the task of bringing the Triffids music to a new generation. Again it seems that Australian recording labels are turning their backs on one of the most critically acclaimed bands ever to originate in Australia.
Ultimately it will mean that those Australians who wish to purchase the box set will do so from overseas vendors with the result that local merchants will lose business again!

That just sucks.
One of the greatest Australian bands of all time,
We will have to start hassling labels.
Young people need to hear this box set.
Wow, Bands influenced by The Triffids, we need good songs.

Excellent! Box looks lolvey, can't wait to see the final tracklisting. It will be great to have the early singles in pristine remastered form (the mp3s that came with the 7" boxset where a bit dodgy). Did Good Morning Good Morning make the cut?

Nice to see the boxset arrive at last!

I wonder if it will have TV adverts saying "...and remember, this is not available in any shops!"

Ordered it straight away! And thankfully it's an upcoming release, so I now have some weeks to raise the money needed. If you see a beggar outside the Barbican in April, it's me.

Always tricky to put together a best of, but I'm pretty happy with the selection and the artwork looks stunning. Thanks, everybody.

I wouldn't be too hard on Liberation. As mentioned before, it's very much a niche product with little chance of making much if any money particularly in a market the size of Australia.

You can see why a record company would be more interested in releasing the Best Of single CD than the box set. One has a potentially wide market of the curious and the moderately interested and is cheap and cheerful to produce and distribute, whilst the latter will only sell to a few "completist" fans and has higher production and distribution costs. It's like chips and caviar, Blue Nun and lebanese wine, etc. It doesn't reflect on the quality of the product that more people buy the one than the other.

I guess we should be grateful to Domino for being prepared to put their neck out and handle the unseasonal hampers :).

Not that I don't think you Aussies should try to twist Liberation's arm. And best of luck in that.
