"where You Are It Will Just Be Getting Light"
« on: January 22, 2004, 12:29:30 AM »
The last line (indeed the whole of the closing section) of Tender Is The Night is pretty memorable and I guess was based on personal experience of missing a loved one separated by time zones and enormous physical distance. Beautifully put and intoned on record - the repeat of the phrase with the wording slightly adjusted and stretched wraps the album up nicely.

It's the first lyric that springs immediately to mind, but I'm sure there'll be plenty more to follow once I've considered further.

It just occurred to me yesterday to wonder if anyone who travelled to Belgium had felt a twinge, for the folk they left in Aus, on rehearsing this one.  But I'm sure it's a nonstop riot of Trappist beer and football and no one has time for such introspection.  Really I just wanted to reply to a note posted 30 months ago.  Must have been one of your first Urpal!

I have no idea what David had in mind when he wrote those words but I'm sure it has, in one way or another, everything to do with distance.

I see it as the distance between starting out in life and dying.

So, zappadappa. A fan of the Bangles version of Hazy Shade of Winter by any chance?  ;D

Going back on topic to this unearthed gem, those lines are among the loveliest he wrote. Simple, bittersweet and beautifully evocative for anyone who's spent any time on the opposite side of the world to the people they love.

I wish that I knew better than to think that I knew better

Hi Cassiel :)

I just like how schlocky it is (plus who doesn't think Ms Hoffs is a babe ;) )

But back to the subject

I think you can feel that way standing next to the person

Unrequited comes to mind.
