This isn't actually a cover, but about halfway through the song it features the spoken word intro from Kelly's Blues. I believe this was done by Jill Birt, although someone else could verify that. It doesn't seemed to be acknowledged anywhere on the sleeve of the album. The funny thing was that i bought the albums a couple of weeks apart and had only listened to Calenture a couple of times before listening to Striving For the Lazy Perfection and suddenly thought I'd put the wrong album on when I heard the sample.

Is that the "You think of everything, my dear, but you do not think of me" line your talking about? It's very effective and unusual as a song intro. I can hear it in my mind's eye now and always assumed it was Jill Birt too. It would be good to know definitively: Also whether it is nicked from somewhere, an old B&W film with Bette Davis perhaps, or Dave's own imagining in the style of?

I'd be interested to hear how it was re-employed in the song by The Orchids. I can't now imagine it in any other place than where I'm used to hearing it said.

Yeah it is that line. It does sound very strange, but maybe wouldn't if you'd never heard Kelly's Blues. I don't if there's anywhere online you can hear the song.

It's not Jill, it's Gil's (Norton) wife Jane, and I don't quite know what they're doing using it. It's part of a song and having been sampled like that you would think that some kind of permission would have been sought.

Definitely one of my favourite intros all time, and it works so well with that figure that follows. In my embarrassing younger years I used to write it as a sort of dedication in books etc I gave away to not very impressed girls (I told you it was embarrassing).

It would indeed be interesting to learn more about how these lines came about, and if Jane was some kind of pro - she at least sounds like one (I mean, she was just compared to Bette Davies above). The words certainly sound like a quote or a reference of some sort.

I agree it has a certain poetry to it, so could understand you using it in the way you did. Did you expect the dedicated girls to respond along the lines of "But I do think of you often, my dear, and it seems everything can go to blazes when I do"?  Wink

The line also appears on one of Dave's short stories. Jane also contributes the bloocurdling scream on (song escapes me) on Calenture.
