March 5 1985 Melbourne University

The only time I managed to see the Triffids live.

I'm assuming that was the date - it was an afternoon gig, and the Triffids were in Melb briefly. Early '85 fits my memories of where I was and what I was doing at the time, so by a process of elimination that must have been the gig.

I went with my friend Kerrie Hicken, who I believe knew the band at the time. Since I'd remember meeting the band if I had, I don't think I did. I have an idea that I left Kerrie to socialise and wandered off alone after the band played.

I do remember that it was intense. I can remember thinking that it felt like an earthquake, and that I was very impressed that they managed to produce that much intensity at an afternoon gig at Melb Uni.

I'd liked the band for several years before that, and had bought their singles, but never managed to see them apart from that one time. I'm kicking myself now for not having made the extra effort. I was 19 at the time, and starting to make my own way as a musician, and I'd kind of left behind the stuff I'd been into a year or two before, which was the Birthday Party, the Scientists, Moodists, all those great Australian bands of the early 80s.

So it's lucky for me that I did go and see  the Triffids even once, as by that time my tastes had become very retro and I was getting deeply into all the stuff that the post-punk movement considered deeply unfashionable, like Led Zep. I'd started to think of current Australian bands as "the competition" and I wasn't interested in hearing them by '85.

At least I did manage to see the bands I mentioned before I decided that they were the older generation I was going to usurp. And at least I was smart enough to still want to see the Triffids live and to go along with Kerrie on the day.

Oddly enough, I knew Julian Wu vaguely at the time, but I don't recall seeing him there, possibly because it was a daytime gig. I've only got to know him properly in the last few years, after travelling in different circles for a long time. It's odd how these things work.
