The press reviews have almost universally been excellent and that last set are no exception. I'm curious to know whether there is anything much now in the way of indications of increased consumer interest, or are the journalists crying in the wilderness too? I haven't heard a Triffids song on the radio or anything like that since the latest set of re-issues, which suggests either the broadcast media is indifferent or getting no airplay requests.

In my local HMV "superstore" on Sunday there were about three copies of ITP in the racks and the index cards for Calenture and BSD lay bare suggesting the possibility of some sales.

Triffids radio play has been pretty good actually, I'll dig out the radio report - I have it somewhere. I'd even say better than last time. What HMV is it again - I can trace the sales reorders from my machinery here. J

Excellent news. I realise that with station playlists and the overriding urge to always be "living in the moment" a twenty year old album is unlikely to feature on strong rotation - and I only listen to the radio over morning coffee and on occasional long journeys so I'm unlikely to pick up on owt.

It was HMV in Market Street Manchester city centre.

Piccadilly Records had one copy of ITP on the shelves.

Neither store had a Calenture in stock unless it was hiding.

I'd certainly be interested in the local stats.

Here's a big one from Pennyblack
Not sure about that interpretation of A Trick Of The Light though.

It's a good review that. Whoever wrote it has clearly taken care as well as time and trouble. I'm not sure Nick Cave would subscribe wholesale to the concept of being influenced by The Triffids though, unless you took it as a mutual doffing (without any biffing Grin).

It's fascinating, and occasionally illuminating, to read other people's interpretations of songs: particularly in the case of Dave's where literal narrative and metaphor twist and turn in ways that leave the listener a number of avenues to go down and all of them sufficiently obscure for other interpretations to be valid.

Do you often find other people's interpretations of Dave's songs odd, Graham? Any amusing stories about Dave's of other band members reactions to press interpretations? It must be a source of occasional discussions.

Well, I'm not necessarily right in my own interpretations of songs but I'm pretty sure the middle bit of Trick isn't about actual physical violence.

Is this something that Bleddyn's book might give some insight into? .....not the middle section of TOTL specifically, but the biographical, factual or entirely imagined background to some of Dave's lyrics..

Both LPs are reviewed by the same reviewer in the quartery Scottish music mag 'Is This Music?'. 3 stars for Calenture and 4 for ITP - it's fair to say that the reviewer is not a fan of the Calenture production. And he mentions Neighbours.

I'll scan both when I get home tomorrow if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Sadly it's the last printed ITM? - the website is here bt it doesn't seem to be behaving at the moment.
