This gig was the bargain of the year and a couple of hundred people took advantage of it. $5 in and $2 for a glass of very tasty wine, three excellent and varied musical experiences and plenty of interesting photos to look at if you got bored with the music.
Essendon Airport played in the foyer, vaguely hoping they would not be the centre of attention so they could actually enjoy playing elevator music. People sat down or stood back with studied looks however and we felt a little nervous. All went well.
The music then shifted to a room further around where Robin Fox played his beats and noises with squiggly projections. This went down a treat with Kosmo. When the projection began with a pulsating ring he declared it a "ghost heart" and I, unfortunately, had to take him out to the corridor as his enjoyment of the scene and sound became a little too much for those around us. Robin later mentioned that he wished he'd stayed.
David Toop had borrowed, detuned and prepared my lapsteel and made some very tiny and beautiful sounds on it and other gadgets and wind instruments for the next 40 minutes.
He did tell a story at the beginning about a friend asking him if a conservative attack on postmodern ideas was being conducted in the UK to the level that it seems to be here. He said he didn't think so but then the thought struck him in his hotel room that the person many people would consider the leading art critic in the UK is Rolf Harris. He hoped this thought wouldn't resurface during the next 40 minutes.
Then I said my goodbyes and went home.
