Well done Johan - I've been looking forward to this.

Are there any rules though? Are compilations allowed? For example Tom Waits' Orphans features a huge amount of new material. And I guess reissues are out (separate poll maybe Wink).

No reissues, no.
We did compilations last year, so I guess they could be included, although I'm actually not in favour.
Maybe we should do a poll on whether to include compilations or not?

That is probably the best poll idea I ever have heard, Johan! Cheesy

I'd add Junior Boys, Destroyer, The Format, The Futureheads and LCD Soundsystem if you count "45:33" as a full-length.

here's rough trade's top 100 - they've got a few things right for once (don't agree with it, but like the way they bung Lilly Allen in there - watch the weird electronica lads heads' boil  Grin).

http://www.roughtrade.com/site/content.lasso?page=top100_2006.html

Can I ask for these to be added, Johan?

Carrie Rodriguez - Seven Angels on a Bicycle
Chip Taylor - Unglorious Hallelujah
Paul Burch - East to West
Don McGlashan - Warm Hand
Tres Chicas - Bloom, Red and the Ordinary Girl
Gob Iron - Death Songs for the Living
Babybird - There's Nothing between my ears but music.
Beirut - Gulag Orkestar (as good as they tell you)

With Jenny Lewis, Neko Case and Midlake that pretty much makes up my top ten(ish). For me, it's been a year for the laydeeeeez: Carrie best album, Jenny second, Midlake and the Gob Iron lads interloping, but Neko at five. A great year for country/country-folk all round.

What about the Carbon T-shirt Custard album you were raving about the other night?

Ssssh. First rule about being Carbon T-Short Custard fans: don't talk about Carbon T-Shirt Custard.

My tip for 2007 though. They will rule!

Haven't heard anything like enough of that main list for my liking, but of the ones I have heard, I know some to be truly, utterly, dreadful. C*m*ra Obsc*ura, for example, have no place on a list of the ten best albums with occasional mandolin and trumpet released by Glaswegian bands on 6 June 2006, never mind album of the year.

Perhaps we should have a two stage process, so that everything on Johan's original list has a week in which to find someone to second it, and if it doesn't then it's kicked off the list. Then we add our nominations and the real voting begins.

And how about negative votes? I might be happy for all ten of mine to count against the aforementioned twee, floppy, spineless bedwetters.

Otherwise, Johan, it's an impressive piece of work. Did you start with the Rate Your Music list again and edit out all the death metal?

It's been a year of restored faith for some [the Lips, Costello, Mozzer, Yorke, Jarvis] and:

foburg - Cathal Coughlan
Ole Tarantual - Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3
Coal - Devastation [released here this year]

The jury being out on others

Dayvan Cowboy - Boards of Canada
Dark Orgasm - JC
Personality = Sleepy Jackson
The Lemonheads
Garden Ruin - Calexico

And a single digit to some former friends

Just Like the fambly Cat - Grandaddy

In terms of newbies, I'd add Tunng - Comments of the Inner Chorus to the big list.

Yes, that's pretty much how I did it, the metal AND hiphop-albums were left out, and Christina Aguilera's album, which made the RYM's top 200 too. I just selected the ones that I thought some of us could like enough to make it into their top 10.

I'm not so sure about negative votes, as to how it could be done technically. Surely if no one likes a record it will get no votes anyway?
