That's it.  With one exquisitely placed word, DMC elevates himself from the singer in a rock band to master storyteller whilst, at the same time, showing an innate understanding of what makes great music great - timing, spatial awareness, how things should sound. You know what I mean or you don't but I think what I'm talking about exists only to be felt rather than to be explained so this is as good as I can make it.   I think it's my favourite Triffids moment.

You're exactly right. I've never sat down and tried to articulate it before but it's exactly like being sat at the feet of a master storyteller. Someone who can tell a story that you can listen to hundreds of times without getting bored with it - in a way that makes it seem as fresh and new as the very first time you sat enthralled by the unfolding of the tale. The telling of a great story is down to the timing and the steps you take along the way. It's about getting over the whole feel of what you're trying to impart much more than the mundane mechanics of getting the plot to unfold in a logical sequence [EDIT - as I was saying to Dan Brown just the other day...]

Sorry Lulu - this 'well' is at the start of the last verse of 'Lonely stretch'.
Maybe you could add it to the repertoire for the next forum meet-up?
