Remember these words: De Rosa.

All I can tell you, for now, is that I've been listening to a preview copy of their debut album, Mend, all week, and I still have no idea how to do justice to it without making you all think that I've gone completely and utterly insane.

More when I've calmed down a little, though there's still no sign of that happening.

Perhaps it's something to do with using a tree in their artwork:

They're the ones. And I'm still madly, deeply in love with Mend. If I hear another debut as good as this in 2006 I'll quite possibly die of over-excitement.

Just found a cheapish promo copy in town whilst on a post-work rummage.  I was only 60% sure I remembered the name right, because I wasn't looking for it when i came across it, but I thought I'd take a punt on it anyway when I saw it was on Chemikal Underground (Delgados, Mogwai, Arab Strap).  First impressions are that it is very much of the label - very Scottish-sounding (in that melodic post-Slint sort of way rather than in the Big Country way).  Digging it.

De Rosa playing over the next few days in Glasgow, Manchester and London. Details over at their Myspace page. I'm nearly as pissed off about missing those shows as I am about missing The Triffids reunion and the plaque unveiling.

Was about to post something more detailed about De Rosa and Mend, but it seems that the Triffids-loving geezer over at Gigwise has beaten me to it. Further comment seems rather pointless. You'll find the review here.

Funny coincidence, just popped over to the Chemikal Underground site and ordered a copy of 'mend' (+Delgados "live at the fruitmarket") & then I come across this here. Thanks Gazza, I'm all the more intrigued.

Hadn't heard of Live At The Fruitmarket until I went over to the Chemikal shop just now. It's one of those gig-only live CDs that they're now selling over the Internet.

Never really got into The Delgados while they were still going, but I've been listening to their new Peel Sessions album and it definitely won't be the last of theirs that I get. Apart from anything else it's a great overview of their career, in the sense that it starts at the beginning and follows them right through, with Hate being the only album that isn't represented – they did a Peel session at the time Hate was released, but recorded a bunch of covers instead.

Think I remember Urpal mentioning their version of Mr Blue Sky…

"Hate" is probably my favourite but I like most of their stuff. Haven't heard the Peel sessions yet but I might just go back there and get that one as well, hell, it's only a tenner ... (and much less than I had to spend on drink after confusingly unremarkable - not bad but very uneven and what a weird incoherent set list - John Cale gig on Friday).

Rightly or wrongly I'm getting a lot of pre-bleep Radiohead from 'Mend'.
Lots of knotty angsty twitchy playing of great big songs.

After reading Adam's comment I've been listening to early Radiohead all day, and I can't hear any similarity at all. But I do agree pretty much agree with the knotty angsty twitchy description.

Used to love their first three albums, but whenever I reach for their CDs nowadays it's always the post-bleep Radiohead I go for. The early stuff seems really leaden and pompous.

De Rosa very handsomly reviewed in mojo this month - don't have it to hand but a bit about the pixies playing 'before hollywood' has stuck in my mind as lazy-but-not-entirely-unhelpful journalism.
